Noodin and Nish Nung on Moccasin Tracks

We called out to the traditional territory of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibway to catch up with Noodin (James Beard) and his mentor Nish Nung (Brian Matrious) who gift us with this conversation of stories and a beautiful indigenous perspective. Brian talks about the teachings his Grandfather gave him while "Walking The Traditional Life".

All during the conversation eagles gathered on the snow covered lake and flew above which made a beautiful image in our minds eye!

Creator - Hear my prayer

When I hurt the most
Self will t’was true
Self will had failed
And God’s will new

I learned to love him
And accept
And love for me
was the effect

As love for God
And myself grew
I learned to share
that love with you

DECEPTION

By James B Beard aka Noodin 2018

Photo by: James B Beard aka Noodin

Deer is still
Every sound a sign
A stick that snaps
Deer are running

 Wolf pauses in his step
Every scent is telling
A foe might be present
Wolf is on the move

 Trees are bending
Bows break and miss-shape
What was up is down
What was calm is disturbed

 Wind is blowing
Messages travel
Leaves swirl
Invisible motion

 Snake slithers in the grass
Silent and foreboding
Curled up under a rock
Ready to strike

 Earth seems to move
Shadows fool the ground
A stream takes new form
Everything changes

 Crow calls loudly
Gathering the murder
What do they hide
Following the motion

 Blue Jay sounds an alarm
Something is coming
What does he know
Does anyone hear

 Eagle looks down
Watches all things
Watches all things
Watches all things

WHITE MOCS ON THE RED ROAD / WALKING SPIRIT IN A NATIVE WAY·

MONDAY, JANUARY 1, 2018

Some ask what White Mocs on the Red Road means - A white Man's walk learning the Native American Cultural teachings..
To begin to know spirit through the teachings of the ancients. In a time of transition, one begins to look for answers about living that seem to be missing in life. It seems as if the fulfillment of the promise of the American dream is somehow incomplete. One begins to look for something to fill in the missing pieces. Noodin searched for that missing part and almost literally stumbled on the first people of this land. As he began to learn of their continued existence, they led him on an extraordinary path of understanding. These people who he did not even know still existed, continue to have the gifts of a beautiful culture that respects all things. The goal for Noodin then became to find those gifts.
